Rather than a history of a theory, an actor, or an institution, the project writes the history of a series of books consisting almost exclusively of images. While history of science scholarship traditionally has struggled to deal with illustrations as opposed to texts, Sovereign Flowers joins recent innovations within the field of visual epistemology to argue that the Flora Danica tables were intentionally crafted to appear epistemically sovereign to other depictions using naturalistic style, high-quality paper, engraving techniques, and colour.
